Zōjōji Temple (増上寺)

Take a tour around the tranquil grounds of Zojoji Temple.

Situated in a quaint area amidst the city stands the imperial Zojoji Temple. This head temple of the Jodo Sector of Japanese Buddhism was built in 1393, a beautiful structure rich with history from the Kanto region. Covering over 800,000 square metres, the massive temple grounds used to house 48 temples and over 3,000 priests but it is now just a simple and peaceful place for visitors to stroll around and immerse themselves in its rich history! The majestic Sangedatsumon Gate standing at 21 metres tall. Known for being the oldest wooden structure in Tokyo, it welcomes you at the entrance with its vibrant red structure, still standing tall despite going through many disasters from 1622, an architectural reminder of the Edo Period in Japan.


Enter the serene palace grounds where the simple structure of the Mausoleum stands, accompanied by colourful Stone Jizo figures and a small Buddhist cemetery housing the resting places of six shoguns and their wives. There is also a small museum in the temple’s basement showcasing the vast history of the construction and history of the temple. Do not forget to stop and admire the beautiful surrounding sights with the iconic Tokyo Tower too, showing a beautiful contrast between traditional and modern.
