The Zhejiang Art Museum exudes modernity, evident in the jutting peaks of steel and glass atop the roof of the compound. The museum aims to preserve and catalogue the evolution of artistic expression, housing exhibits featuring traditional calligraphy and ink painting as well as artists at the forefront of impressionist art.
The simple white walled exhibition halls host a rotating ensemble of exhibits and artists. Visitors can spend hours walking through the 14 exhibition halls or take part in the various lectures and workshops organized by the museum for public education. A few notable exhibits that took place in the museum include Juan Miro’s showcase. His works explored Surrealism and sought to alter the way visual elements are represented through painting. The Exhibition of Dunhuang Art in 2013 transported visitors directly to the Dunhuang caves, the largest Buddhist cave still standing while the Triennial Fiber Art Exhibition featured tapestries that canvassed the walls and art installations occupying entire floors. Even to the untrained eyes, these art pieces are a look into the artists’ mind, revealing unspoken stories and messages.
