Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa

Discover the largest museum of contemporary African art in the world!

If you’ve had doubts about self-reinvention, then the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (abbreviated as “MOCAA”) will give you a new perspective. From a decrepit Grain Silo to South Africa’s largest art museum: not an easy feat, but a transformation that serves to display the fascinating works exclusively by artists from across the African continent. The Grain Silo was once the tallest building in South Africa, at 57 meters. From afar, the museum already makes an impression with its pillowed glass panels that glint blue in the sunlight.

Step into the museum to discover its fascinating interior, made to embrace the old structure while adding new elements suited for a museum. Concrete cylinders plunge into the ovoid atrium, cut off halfway, not unlike stalactites. Glass elevators transport visitors up and down the fascinating interior, or you can opt for the spiral staircases to explore the former underground tunnels where Edson Chagas has recreated the “Angola Pavilion”. With nine floors and more than a hundred galleries, there is plenty for you to appreciate and learn more about South Africa’s past and its people here. Of course, it’s not just gallery spaces here - when you need a breather, head up to the rooftop sculpture garden or into the bookshop to peruse the various collections. There’s even reading rooms for when you need to curl up somewhere and rest your aching feet.
