Württemberg Mausoleum (Grabkapelle auf dem Württemberg)

A monument symbolising eternal love!

The saying “true love never dies” can certainly be witnessed at the iconic monument of Wurttemberg Mausoleum. This beautiful chapel was constructed by King Wilhelm I between 1820 and 1824, in loving memory of his beloved wife who died at a young age in the year 1819 . In addition, it is also the final resting place of the King’s tomb as well as his eldest daughter’s – truly an evident display of their eternal love.

The building stands at the peak of Wurttemberg Hill, overlooking the breathtaking views of the tranquil Neckar Valley. Its simplistic Rome-inspired architecture, comprising of local sandstone walls and pillars, is a sight to behold. The interior is as magnificent as its exterior, with intricate carvings dotting the white walls and a magnificent dome-shaped roof, which allows sunlight to glisten in. Additionally, the colossal sculptures of the four evangelists, crafted from the finest Carrara marble, exhibit the neoclassical decorative elements within the chapel. The main highlight, however, would definitely be the marble tombs of the King and Queen resting underground (crafted from the same Carrara marble as well), a final testament to their undying love.
