Windansea Beach

Once the haunt of Hot Curl, the iconic knobbly-kneed surfer.

Windansea Beach is a haven for surfers, and for good reason. This stretch of coastline is dotted with rocks and pebbles, and the waves crash in as if inviting the surfers in. Certainly, it's for weathered surfers who can handle the hard breaking surf just a little distance from the shoreline. It will no doubt be thrilling to ride the waves and show your skills off to those sitting at the beach. If you're not much of a surfer yourself, why not settle under the lovely Windansea Shack? This palm-covered shack was originally built around the mid-20th century, although it was leveled to the ground by large waves in 2015. Having become a beloved icon for locals and visitors alike, the shack was rebuilt a year later.

One of the breaks close by is named the “Simmons Break”, after the father of modern surfing Bob Simmons, who died in that very break. Many prolific surfers have frequented this beach, immortalizing Windansea’s reputation as a special spot for surfers. It was also home to Hot Curl, a popular cartoon character who was created by Michael Dormer and Lee Teacher. The 400-pound concrete statue of the character stood by the Shack, gazing out at sea with a beer in hand. He stood in the spot for a considerable amount of time before a storm destroyed the statue.
