Will Rogers Dog Iron Ranch

The home of a proud Cherokee man who won over the world with his lovable charm.

When Will Rogers burst onto the world stage with an explosion of wit and appeal, the world didn’t know what hit them. Born to the descendent of a Cherokee chief, Will Rogers was a true blue Indian Cowboy, spending his days galloping, lasso in hand, through the plains of the wild west. “The Cherokee Kid” was a household name, renowned for his rope throwing prowess and ability to grab the audience’s attention on the vaudeville stage with his chatter, subtle humour and impressive stature. His success extended to Hollywood, where he held the title as the highest paid actor, and even to the newspapers and radios where his talents held no bounds as a wise and entertaining broadcaster.

The house that this one of a kind individual was born and raised in has since been made into a memorial to his name. A typical example of an Indian Territory homestead, it is similar to the Greek Revival style of architecture that was popular in the South in 1875. Dubbed the “White House on the Verdigis”, it is a powerful symbol of cultural heritage to this day. The lean-to kitchen, dining room and three bedrooms are crafted from 10-inch oak, hickory and walnut log. With polished wood, a stone chimney and fireplace, this two storey house is reminiscent of a modern day take on a hunting lodge – all dark rustic browns and rich, cozy warmth.
