Whitney Museum of American Art

An unconventional museum that has displayed live bodybuilders, featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1976.

Located in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan, the Whitney Museum of American Art was founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1931. Spanning a colossal size of 200,000 square feet, the museum is filled with 8 storeys of fascinating art pieces as well as an education centre, a theatre and a library. Focusing on 20th to 21st century American art, there are more than 21,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, films, videos and artefacts of new media by more than 3,000 artists in its permanent collection. The museum is focused on exhibiting art pieces by living artists and less concerned with selling them. From Cindy Sherman to Andy Warhol, prominent names have had their works exhibited here.
