White Tower of Thessaloniki

A tower with a sinister and notorious history during the Ottoman Empire!

The White Tower of Thessaloniki is a historic monument and museum situated at the waterfront of the city of Thessaloniki in Macedonia, Greece. The tower today is replaced an old Byzantine fortress, which was constructed in the 12th century that the Ottoman Empire used to defend the city’s harbour. The tower then became notorious for its prison and mass executions that occurred during the Ottoman rule. It was refurbished subsequently and exterior whitewashed after Greece came to power of the city in 1912 and was adopted as the icon of the city.

The tower stands at 34 metres tall and takes the form of a cylinder of 23 metres in diameter with a turret on the top at 12 metres high. The tower is home to a museum inside that is open to public, displaying a timeline of the city’s history, a map and scientific articles by renowned scientists and academicians. A lovely vantage point to see Greece, head up the tower and see Greece from another point of view.
