Wawel Castle

One of Poland’s most magnificent castles.

Wawel Castle is a castle residency in Kraków's Old Town and was home to the kings of Poland. The architecture of the castle alone is astounding, never mind its interior. it is a delightful mishmash of various architectural styles from the medieval, renaissance and baroque times, and was given the title of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for it is a significant part of the Historic Centre of Kraków. After you're done gaping at the exterior, it's time to head in and discover what's inside.

The castle has since been converted into one of Poland's finest art museums. It was established in 1930 and holds a crucial collection of Italian Renaissance paintings, sculptures, and even Sigismund II Augustus’ tapestry collection. For those of you who love gazing at porcelain from the past, there is a fine Meissen porcelain collection. End off your trip with a visit to the Crown Treasury, where you can admire the glinting crown jewels and perhaps wish that you, too, had been a ruler.
