Washington, D.C., United States of America
Washington National Cathedral

83 years in the making.

Washington's National Cathedral is a massive structure that reigns as the second-largest church building in all of the United States! Considering that construction took a whopping 83 years from the year it was first started, it's no wonder that this incredible building is an iconic location in Washington D.C. The church is a cathedral of the Episcopal Church and its Neo-Gothic design is evident in its spires and arched entrance. To think that President Theodore Roosevelt was present in 1907 to lay the foundation stone and that the last finial (the apex of the spire) was set before the eyes of President H.W. Bush!

The cathedral is carved from Indiana limestone and boasts 215 stained glass windows, including the rose window dedicated to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, and the 39th President, Jimmy Carter. As you enter this imposing cathedral with its fine façade (and abundance of gargoyles), you can find a crypt level. Here, the ever-famous Helen Keller and President Woodrow Wilson are buried. Wander outside into the gardens, and you will feel as if you have stepped into a medieval world. Here, you can find various herbs and vibrant roses, along with a 13th century Norman arch. And while you’re exploring, keep an eye out for a Darth Vader gargoyle (we’re serious).
