Wapta Falls, Yoho National Park

Witness the formidably powerful side of nature at Wapta Falls.

Wapta Falls in Yoho National Park sits across the wild, rushing Kicking Horse River. It is the waterfall with the largest volume of water in Yoho and with its 30-metre drop, creates a magnificent roar of misty spray and rushing water attesting to the raw power of nature.

The waterfall can be accessed by hiking through the 2-kilometer Wapta Falls trail, an easy, clear path with a gentle incline, suitable for even the children. As you approach the waterfall, you will hear a gradually increasing din of water drumming against the rock and your path will eventually open to a stunning view of the waterfall from an ideal vantage point above the falls. From here, there is a path which extends downhill to the base of the waterfall. However, it is rather steep and considerably more challenging than the earlier trail so families with children may want to turn back.

At its base, the thundering water increases to a deafening volume and the mist and spray will shroud you in a foggy, damp cloud. By being this close to the waterfall, you will be able to fully appreciate its magnificent, unbridled strength, though photography will be made much more difficult due to the relentless spray. Walk further down the river for a better view of Wapta Falls from its base and keep hiking along the river for more stunning sights of the National Park.

Tips Before You Go
Less experienced hikers looking for a more relaxing experience should visit during summer, when the trails are snow-free and the weather is mild. The gate is also open in summer, resulting in a shorter round trip of about 5 kilometres. Visit in winter for a more rigorous hike and be prepared to go off-trail due to snowfall, which accounts for the slightly longer distance of 8 kilometres. For extra safety, do consider bringing along your snowshoes or even a pair of micro spikes, in preparation for the slippery paths you might encounter. All visitors, whether in summer or winter, should be well-informed about wildlife precautions and regulations. Most importantly, do remember to bring extra sets of warm clothes as regardless of the season, weather conditions can change abruptly while you are trekking the immense alpine forest of Yoho National Park
