Wannon Falls

Explore Victoria’s state park and follow the sounds of the lush Wannon Falls.

Located in the Southern Grampians, just 20 kilometers west of Hamilton in Western Victoria, is this spectacular 30-metre phenomenon of nature called Wannon Falls. Wannon Falls was created by lava flow that surged upstream to the Wannon River, causing a hardened basalt lava and water to cascade over into a deep plunge pool at the bottom. "How do you know all that?", you might ask. Well, when you are on site, you will observe traces of basalt formations at the rim of Wannon Falls. Following the path of the gushing water, you will notice how rapid the water is flowing around large boulders of basalt (of course...).

From the viewing platform, you can enjoy the tranquil sights and sounds of the rapids as the water carves its way around the basalt rocks. Just close by in the rotunda, you can learn more about the local geology of the falls, the surrounding flora and fauna, heritage of the Koori people and details of colonial artists who painted in the area. For the adventurous nature lovers, you can spend the night at the campsite of Wannon Falls and fall asleep to the relaxing sounds of flowing water.
