Walls of the Old Medina (Fes el Bali)

Explore the wall which served as both the medina’s protection from and gateway to the outside world.

The walls of Fes’s medina were erected in the 11th century when the Almoravid Empire united the different settlements in the city and protected them behind one wall, which still marks the outline of the medina today. Fitted with ramparts, towers and numerous gates and arches, the wall was both an entrance into the prosperous old city which was once Morocco’s capital, as well as a fortress defending it from invaders.

Today you can cycle along the walls and explore its many features. Parts of it, especially those nearer to the city gates, are extremely well-maintained. On the other hand, stretches of wall nearer to the countryside are crumbling. At one point, you can even see the river flowing under it!

Nonetheless, the history behind the walls of Fes’s medina still continues to beacon many to witness centuries of history right before their eyes.

Tips Before You Go
The medina’s wall is rather long so it would be advisable for you to just select which parts of it you want to see instead of circling the city’s circumference.
