Waimea Bay

Besides being stunningly gorgeous, this bay holds a deep historical significance that goes way beyond the aesthetics.

It all starts when a simple weather forecast predict Winter storms kicking up big waves. Surfers grab their boards and hustle down to this beach to catch the enormous waves that the ocean swells send crashing towards the shore. This bay is situated on the legendary North Shore, and is a surf spot that dominated the categories of big wave surfing in the 1950s, and this reputation still follows it to today.

“When Eddie Would Go” is a popular phrase thrown around among the elite surfers who take to Waimea Bay, a way to judge whether to hold the famous Quiksilver surf competition is to decide whether the waves are worthy of the great and mighty Eddie Aikau to surf. His memorial stands on the park grounds, a testament to his selfless bravery when he risked his life, paddling out to sea in treacherous conditions to rescue capsized canoeists, and was never seen again.

In Hawaii, the waves have to be a minimum 10-20 feet high, often jumping to 30 feet, and that’s just the backside - the front reaches almost double that! It is truly a spectacle to behold the surfers, who appear as tiny figures, cutting a fine line through this massive wall of water. It attracts the likes of surfing legends Greg Knoll, Ken Bradshar, and Andy Irons, who delight in the towering beasts of waves.

During Summer, the waters are free reign for the normal beach goer to swim in, once the waves calm down. It transforms into a wide, open stretch of beach to lay out your towel or picnic mat and enjoy a day under the Hawaiian sun. Fans of the record breaking TV series “Lost” will rejoice at the fact that it filmed many a scene at this bay. Come and find yourself Lost in the excitement of Waimea Bay, the playground for surfers and awesome entertainment for the rest of us.

Tips Before You Go
The remains remains of Pu\'u o Mahuka, an important heiau used by ancient Hawaiians, still sits above the bay. From here, you can catch a good view of Waimea Bay and the Waianae Mountain range. The nearby Waimea Valley is also beautiful to explore, and a trip to Haleiwa for a cool shaved ice dessert after a hot day on the beach is highly recommended as well.
