Maui’s Black Sand Beach.

Okay, okay, you've heard of it all: white sand, golden sand, pink sand and black sand… Wait. Black sand? Well, if you're embarking on the ever-famous road to Hana, stopping by at the Waianapanapa State Park is a must-do. Make your way down the short path and stairs to set your foot on the black sand beach. Rare as it is, you definitely don't want to miss this opportunity.

Sink your toes into the black sand and wade over into the water. Keep an eye out for black lava pebbles - you’ll know ‘em when you hear ‘em, because these pebbles make pretty distinct sounds as they travel to shore with the waves, and recede with them. Don’t worry. Admiring the sand isn’t all you can do here. Jog over to the right side of the beach to peer into the lava tube, through which you can see the pale blue of the ocean water sloshing on the other side. If you’re a bird-watcher, then the small islands along the ocean side of the path are sanctuaries for birds. Far in the distance, you can see the natural lava arch, forming a beautiful setting for the perfect picture. Adventurers, you can explore the trails that lead to the spring-fed sea caves, and we promise you won’t be disappointed by this quick detour on your road to Hana.
