A great place to experience history in the present!
If you’re used to stuffy buildings and stifling museums, the Wadköping Open Air Museum will feel like a breath of fresh air—literally! It does not have exhibits of a specific nature per se, but its charmingly quaint houses are meant to exhibit life in Örebro as far back as the 17th century.
The houses are constructed of dark red paneled wood, with white paint detailing for a traditional Nordic vibe. Charming greenery and cobbled lanes complete the look and indeed give you a fantastic idea of what Örebro’s streets used to look like. A town street cuts through the middle of Wadköping, with the houses from the 17th to the early 19th century on one side. The other side depicts Wadköping’s cityscape after the great fire of 1854.
Today, the museum’s buildings house various shops, craft workshops and other exhibition venues, making it come alive. You’ll even find antiques such as ceramics, clothes and fine Swedish woodwork belonging to previous generations being showcased here, a great way to understand how life back in their day was like!
