Vondelpark

Amsterdam’s finest park.

Right smack in at the heart of Amsterdam is its ever-popular sprawling greenery in the form of Vondelpark. With plenty of green space, you can do everything from enjoying a quiet stroll to whizzing past everyone else on rollerblades or trying to keep up with your overenthusiastic dog. Named after Joost Van Vondel, a Dutch poet and play writer, the park also features an open-air theatre and plenty of playgrounds for the children to run about in. Century-old flora still exists here, including old horse chestnut and Dutch red chestnut trees.

If you love watching animals, and birds, in particular, you can find wild ducks paddling across the water, and blue herons standing by the riverbank. Apart from the natural attractions, you can admire the water features and many sculptures, including “The Fish” by Picasso! Naturally, there is a statue of Joost van Vondel as well, and the park came to be known as Vondelpark (“Vondel’s Park”). A bandstand was built soon after, and a rose garden was created at the center of the park. Head on to the open-air theatre to check out if there are any performances going on. You’ll definitely be having so much fun you won’t notice the hours passing by.
