Villa Torlonia

Come see the place where Mussolini lived for almost 2 decades.

The Villa Torlonia lies in Rome and it looks absolutely gorgeous with its beautifully manicured gardens. It was designed by the Neoclassical architect Giuseppe Valadier, and belonged to the Torlonia family. Two pink granite obelisks rise majestically in the garden, acting as tributes to Alessandro Torlonia’s parents. Visitors will no doubt be wowed by the architectural splendour of the villa, which also used to be the residence of Mussolini from 1925 to 1943.

Besides that, visitors will surely appreciate the stunning artwork done by the painter and architect Giovan Battisti Caretti, who was also commissioned by Alessandro to construct the rather interesting false ruins, as well as the imposing Temple of Saturn. Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses in the garden too. In fact, be sure to delight your senses as you walk around the captivating Tribuna con Fontana. This villa is more than just a house; it is a masterpiece.

Tips Before You Go
The Villa Torlonia is unlike other parts of Rome where tourists tend to congregate. As such, this is a great place to get away from the maddening crowds and just enjoy some peace and quiet. Do take note that you need to book a tour in advance if you wish to enter Mussolini’s underground bunker, which he used back in World War 2.
