Designed in the style of Neoclassical decadence, Baron Jacques d’Adelsward Fersen built the villa, specially dedicated to the feelings of love and angst. Exquisite marble stairways lead to bedrooms with panoramic terraces, overlooking lush greenery and pristine, turquoise waters. Intricate detailing ranging from floral motifs, gold leaves and Oriental influences can be found here, with a lounge decorated with blue majolica and white ceramic. Arcs and domed roofs were present throughout the house, representative of classical architecture. The bathrooms were no exception to the decadence displayed, made out of marble, it featured a thermarium-shaped bath, intricately decorated with small mosaics. Every nook and cranny of the villa is decked out with decadent and eclectic décor, each possessing their own personality which contributed harmoniously to the romantic vibes of the villa.

A shrine inscribed with the phrase “Amori et dolori sacrum” meaning a shrine to love and sorrow showcased Fersen’s romanticised view of himself. An apt inscription, Fersen’s life was very much tainted with crimes against public decency and hedonistic desires. Thus, he chose to leave that all behind, creating a secluded and romantic place where he would live out the happiest days of his life till death. Choosing to find companionship in a young man – Nino Cesarini, the beautiful young man was a muse for several art pieces. Ranging from paintings and portraits, the most famous were the bronze statues, seeking to immortalise his beauty in various positions. Cesarini remained by Fersen’s side till his death, a loyal companion. A place brimming with an eclectic mix of different architectural influences, the villa surprises you at every turn.
