Villa Jovis

A remarkable villa, situated on a secluded island, it’s fantastic location boasts a deep history.

The largest villa out of 12 Tiberian villas, Villa Jovis is a name you must remember. An amazing testament to 1st century Roman architecture, what remains are ruins of its grandeur long gone, no less spectacular.

Located on the most northeast of the island Capri, it was built by Emperor Tiberius, fearful of an assassination upon him. Fortified with possibly everything he could find then, the villa is especially secluded, with certain areas being especially tough to get to. Known to be the most magnificent of Emperor Tiberius’ residences, it extends over 7,000 square metres, complete with large cisterns and water tanks. Featuring several elaborate rooms, they were all covered in exquisite marble. Extensive areas to bathe were interestingly located in dense gardens and woodlands that surrounded the villa. The interesting location for showers was unique and ingenious, allowing for the patron to see the surrounding calming greenery. Now subject to the test of time, what remains are ruins. It takes an imaginative mind to visualise the grandeur that previously existed. Whilst here, you must check out Tiberius’ Leap! A cliff overlooking the most serene panoramic views, subjects that Tiberius did not agree with were hurled, right into the deep blue. A stunning vantage point, you must be sure to check out the views here. A seemingly long half hour walk here, the journey here is absolutely worth seeing what remains of Tiberius’ splendour.
