Viking World Museum

Stand at the prow of the Icelander, and experience what it’s like to be a viking.

The hulking marvel of wood and steel strung up mid-air within the Viking World Museum is a replica of the 1990s Icelander, build almost entirely by the shipwright Gunnar Marel Eggertsson. Visitors are welcome to explore the decks of the ship, run through its passageways and walk down its gangplanks as they attempt to relate to the Nordic ancestors who once occupied these lands.

With a total of 5 exhibition halls in 4 different languages, the Viking Museum pulls back the veil on one of the first conquerors of the oceans. The elegant glass features and minimalistic touches display the distinctive architectural flair of Guomundur Jonsson, a Norway based architect with multiple awards to his name. Yet the most notable feature museum has to be the view by the café tucked under the hull of the ship. Large bay windows are a portal to the vast Flaxafloi Bay where you can spend hours sipping a steaming cup of coffee, gazing at the snow capped wilderness beyond.

Tips Before You Go
If you happen to be at the Museum, restless 8-year olds in tow, do stop by the Settlement Zoo. A small enclosure of farm animals such as lambs, calves and birds, the animals are sure to put a smile on your children’s faces.
