This renowned Orangerie protects up to 1,200 precious trees and shrubs during Winter.
The Versailles Orangerie, commonly known as Orangerie, is the masterpiece of the Gardens of Versailles designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart between 1684 and 1686. Nestled under the "Parterre du Midi" in the lower part of the palace, the Versailles Orangerie is the section of the palace gardens where exotic plants and trees can be found. This grand garden has a 155-metre long central gallery with a 13-metre high vaulted ceiling that is flanked by two stairways ("les Cent-Marches" or the hundred steps). A wonderland it is, it will definitely leave an impression on you with its distinct architecture and vast array of 1,200 exotic trees; from orange, lemon and pomegranate trees, to oleanders and even rosebays. These tropical trees are sheltered here during winter and spread across its parterre in summer.
