United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

A haunting memorial of humanity’s tragic past.

If you have always wanted to understand the Holocaust better (whether you're a history buff or not) the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum welcomes you to do just that. The museum's permanent exhibition, simply titled "The Holocaust", will walk you through the major events that took place during this time, while giving you a glimpse of the unimaginable horrors that the Jews faced. Peer at artifacts and photographs, and sit through films that display a chronological retelling of the Holocaust. The personal items of survivors are particularly sobering, and it will no doubt be harrowing to listen to eyewitness testimonies.

The exhibit will no doubt remind of the folly that is brought about by prejudice, inciting violence and discrimination. You will also learn that it's not only the physical violence - anti-Semitic publication built perceptions that have lasted decades and have had an equally devastating effect. Your children will definitely learn more than they could in a classroom, as they listen to the tale of Daniel, a child who grew up in Nazi Germany. Don't be fooled by the museum's name! It features an exhibit on Cambodia in the late 1970s and the dreadful actions of the Khmer Rouge and the resulting death of 2 million Cambodians. With so much to learn and understand, and new perspectives to be gained, you might find yourself hanging around here for longer than planned.
