Tuttomondo of Keith Haring

Art brings people together.

Painted by American artist Keith Haring in 1989, the Tuttomondo mural is a fascinating work of art in Pisa that is off the tourist track. This colourful mural may appear cartoonish at first but is actually a reflection of world harmony. Perhaps even more interesting than the artwork itself is the tale behind how it came to be. Haring sketched out the figures but rather than paint it in himself, he would ask the help of passersby to paint it, thereby creating something of a communal project. Among these figures, there is a woman carrying a baby in her arms, representing maternity. Also, there are two men in the murals who can be seen supporting a dolphin which suggests mankind’s relationship with nature. Sadly, the Tuttomondo mural is immortalized as the artist’s final work as he died of AIDS later that year. Nevertheless, stop by the church of St. Antonio and check out the south wall to see this profound mural for yourself.
