A museum all about people, the diversity yet striking similarities that brings us all together, Tropenmuseum is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Revolving around the themes of mourning, celebration, décor, praying or fighting, these universal themes are spread across the broad spectrum of different countries in the world. From Indonesia in Asia, Africa and South America, these culturally diverse countries all experience the aforementioned themes differently. That is exactly what Tropenmuseum is best at showcasing and telling.

Bringing together people of all nationalities and cultures, they tell the story of how each and every one has a shared experience, regardless of colour, and how they are all different, yet so similar. An exhibition here that perfectly encapsulates this is that of the history of slavery. The intriguing artefacts ranging from photos and videos present the tragic stories of how many were subject to slavery under the Dutch government. You can even check out the story of how Indonesia was at the mercy of the colonial Dutch, making use of them for the spice monopoly they possessed. With seven lifelike dolls in the image of people who had once existed, they present you with the true stories of their experiences, thoughts and emotions at that time. Just hearing about their tragedies is sure to leave you feeling sympathetic for them, thankful you no longer have to experience such things. A heart-warming, inspiring and eye-opening museum, you mustn’t miss this out when in Amsterdam!
