Tromsø Cathedral (Tromsø Domkirke)

Norway’s only wooden cathedral.

Consecrated in 1861, the Tromsø Cathedral, or Tromsø Domkirke, is a rather unique cathedral in the city of Tromsø, Norway, as it is the only Norwegian cathedral to be constructed out of wood. This Gothic monument was made using timber, utilizing a cog joint method. This church was designed by architect Christian Heinrich Grosch, who designed more than 80 other Norwegian churches in the 19th century, such as the Ølmheim Church.

The calming yellow wooden exterior is just a precursor for what to expect on the inside. At the altar lies a copy of the painting of the Resurrection by artist Adolph Tidemand, and the vibrant stained glass windows are the handy work of famous Norwegian artist Gustav Vigeland. With a seating capacity of about 600, the Tromsø Cathedral is one of the country’s biggest wooden churches, and certainly worth a visit.
