Troll’s Footpath

A magical, meandering drive to experience the natural beauty of Norway.

Norway’s most popular tourist attraction, the Troll’s Footpath (Trollstigen) takes you on a scenic journey through mountains and valleys. Finished in 1936, the road is a series of hairpin turns and steep inclines, revealing some of the most beautiful sights in Norway. A series of lofty mountains greet you from both sides of the road and about halfway through the drive, you will cross a bridge made completely out of natural stone, built right across the spectacular Stigfossen waterfall.

Look out for the Trollstigen Platform and the two viewing points as well. Hanging over the valley, these points offer a breath-taking bird’s eye view over the beautiful valley, allowing you to see the entire road stretching out beneath you. At the end of your drive, you will find the Trollstigen Road Museum, which displays photographs taken during the construction of the road, and the tools used to achieve this magnificent feat of engineering.

All the adventure and scenery aside, the highlight for some will naturally be… The trolls! If you have a keen eye, you might spot one standing guard right outside of a rest stop before the first curves on the road.

Tips Before You Go
Make sure to drive safely as careless driving on the steep inclines and sharp turns can have dire consequences. The optimal time to visit the Troll’s Footpath is anytime apart from spring when the snow in the mountains has started to melt. This becomes particularly dangerous especially when you are halfway on your journey across the Stigfossen Bridge where vehicles are bound to get splashed by the sheer volume of water gushing down the Stigfossen waterfall.
