Troll Wall

A massive vertical mountain wall with craggy peaks.

Known as Trollveggen in Norwegian, the Troll Wall is the tallest vertical rock face in Europe, spanning over 1000 metres in height. The Troll Wall is part of the mountain Trolltindene, rising steeply out of the verdant valley into magnificent rock peaks. According to Norwegian folklore, this amalgam of small and dramatic peaks were trolls who did not manage to return home before sunrise, and thus, were turned to stone. With frequent rock falls, snowstorms and fog cover, the treacherous Troll Wall is the gateway climb for mountaineers who want in on the ranks of the tough. You can take your pick from the ten climbing routes, which are constantly changing due to the shifting landscape. But the Troll Wall is not just a place for daredevils; situated at the base of the Troll Wall lies Trollveggen Café and Visitor Centre, where you can grab a warm cup of coffee or hot chocolate, or even have a gander at the wall rising before you from the viewing platform. If you so desire, you could opt to go on a hike up the wall – after all, the breath-taking view from the top as you look out of the vast unbroken sky into the valley is a surreal sight.

Tips Before You Go
If you plan to climb or hike the Troll Wall, check the weather before visiting it. It is a treacherous enough climb when the weather is good, so you can expect it to be a lot more dangerous when the weather’s bad. There are guided hikes available as well, and these are recommended for novice climbers who are still learning the ropes.
