Rethymno, Greece
Triopetra Beach

Shades of deep brown and ochre form three imposing structures of layered rock, fingers projected from the peninsula to hold the ocean. Welcome to the “Three Rocks”.

Named after the shelves of rock found along the beach, Trioptera boasts views of brilliant white against a vast plane of bright blue. Its shores are split along the rocky peninsula into two beaches, the smaller Koumado with its bay of sand and rock, and the main Chatzi stretching to the west. Although the Chatzi’s shores appear easier to navigate, you are wont to be sprayed by the coarse grit and spray by the strong western winds that make the walk slightly unpleasant. A short walk along the Three Rocks away from the shore will lead you to the gaping maw of a cave dug into the sides of the rock shelves. Here, tourists can seek respite against the heat after a relaxing swim in the calmer waters criss-crossing across the rocky outcrop. As you end the day, don’t forget to capture a lasting image of the sun painting the sky and rocks a haze of vermillion, the perfect end to a perfect day.
