Trinity Church Cemetery & Mausoleum

Visit the only active cemetery and mausoleum in Manhattan.

One of New York's most important burying grounds, the Trinity Church Cemetery & Mausoleum was established in 1842. This memorial park spans across 24 acres, which is extremely large, and it is imbued with the rich histories of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. As the only active cemetery and mausoleum in Manhattan, this hallowed ground has been the final resting place for many historical figures. Notable ones include the naturalist John James Audubon, the anti-slavery activist Cadwallader D. Colden, as well as the merchant prince John Jacob Astor. Be sure to visit when the cherry trees are in full blossom, and you will be able to enjoy a moment of poetic tranquillity amidst the hustle and bustle of New York.

Tips Before You Go
Visitors are allowed to take pictures of the cemetery, but no close-up shots of individual tombstones are allowed, out of respect. Dress appropriately if you plan on stopping by. Avoid loud colours and graphic pieces of clothing and opt for darker ones instead.
