Trajan’s Market

See one of the world’s oldest and best-preserved shopping complexes.

Located near the Quirinal Hill in Rome, Trajan's Market was constructed between 107 and 110 AD by Emperor Trajan's favourite architect, Apollodorus of Damascus. The complex itself is massive, and is comprised of warehouses, shops and offices where the Romans would gather to buy goods and trade. In fact, you can think of it as an ancient shopping centre! It is so incredibly well preserved and provides greater insight into the daily lives of ancient Roman citizens.

Take a stroll along Via Biberatica or the complex's corridors and see the rooms that once housed the tabernae, which were barrel-vaulted cubicles with tiny windows and huge openings leading to the street. There are a whopping 150 tabernae to admire here, and they are all inlaid with beautiful mosaic decorations. Just walking past them will undoubtedly help you visualise life in the Roman Empire.

Tips Before You Go
Unlike the Coliseum and the Forum, most tourists hardly come by Trajan’s Market. This might be due to the complex being lesser known, which is great; since you can truly immerse yourself in ancient Roman history as you walk through the ruins in relative peace. There is even an elevator here to help those with difficulty walking explore the different levels.
