Tower of London

Sent to the Tower.

Situated along the banks of the River Thames, the Tower of London is a monumental part of England’s rich history. It was once a palace and later a prison during the Tudor period. Several disgraced elites such as Sir Walter Raleigh and Elizabeth I were held within the prison grounds, which brought about the saying, “sent to the Tower”. Contrary to popular belief, most of the executions occurred on the hill behind the tower, but of the ones that took place within the Tower of London, perhaps the most significant figure would be Anne Boleyn, King Henry VIII's second wife, who was charged with treason. Her ghost is still said to haunt the tower, carrying her head in her arms.
