Torghatten

A gentle mountain with a hole tunnelling through its centre.

An iconic landmark of Norway, Torghatten is a distinctive granite mountain situated on the island of Torget. According to Norwegian legend, its unusual hole was formed in a fiasco – a troll Hestmannen shot an arrow at the beautiful Lekamøya who was trying to escapeBut he was foiled by the Troll King who blocked the arrow by throwing his hat between them. This arrow that pierced through the hat, now turned to stone, formed the hole you see today. Although the hole looks tiny from a distance, when you trek up the mouth of the hole, an impressive 160-metre long tunnel snakes before you, measuring 35 metres in height and 20 metres in width. Make your way through this winding tunnel to a spectacular view of tiny islands afloat on ocean blue waters on the other side. Or perhaps you’d rather hike to the summit, where you will be afforded a 360° view of Norway spreading out before you. At sunset, you can ready your camera for a gorgeous view of the sun aligning with the hole to pour a spotlight of golden rays onto the sea surface. The one-of-a-kind Torghatten is your only chance to trek through a mountain tunnel with dazzling views.

Tips Before You Go
Even those with claustrophobia can walk through the tunnel, as it is easy to see the other side from the entrance. What this means is that there is a lot of light being let in, so you won’t feel trapped in an enclosed space. However, the stone steps towards the end are rather slippery due to the sea spray. Those with mobility issues may not want to embark on the journey through the tunnel then, as it can be rather difficult to walk on the stone steps once you’re near the end.
