Tønsberg Cathedral

Step back in time upon as you enter this Gothic-style architectural work of art.

Conveniently located near the center of Tønsberg, the Tønsberg Cathedral is steeped in history and possesses great religious significance to the Diocese of Tønsberg. Interestingly, the church was built over the site of the old St. Laurentius Church, and despite being consecrated in 1858, was only conferred the official status of cathedral in 1948 upon the creation of the Diocese of Tønsberg.

The Tønsberg Cathedral is greatly admired for its beautiful Gothic-style brick architecture designed by talented architect Christian Heinrich Grosch. Fascinating religious artefacts that should not be missed include the altarpiece, depicting Jesus’ struggle at Gethsemane, and the pulpit, depicting the four evangelists and their personal symbols. Undoubtedly, the oldest treasures of the Tønsberg Cathedral are the two 16th-century Bibles, one from 1550 and one from 1589.

Known by the locals for its important role as “The Cathedral in the Center of the City”, the Tønsberg cathedral is a safe haven for many, and provides all visitors with a tranquil space for reflection and prayers in the midst of bustling city life.
