The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier – a solemn site for all to visit and honor the soldiers who fought tirelessly for their country’s freedom. Unveiled to the public in 1932 and located in front of the beautiful old Royal Palace, it remains a beautiful place to pay respects and witness for yourself the delicately carved monument created by Kostas Demetriadis. Given the immense importance of this sacred monument to every Greek, it is guarded throughout the day by two Evzones, soldiers belonging to the Presidential Guard, an elite unit of the Greek Army. At the heart of the intricate monument along with the antique marble-stone walls rests a carving of a fallen Greek Soldier, truly depicting the immense amount of dedication and love these soldiers had and still have for their country.
