Tomb of the Al-Bagawat (El-Bagawat)

A timeless Christian burial ground containing magnificent works of art.

The Tomb of the Al-Bagawat is a cemetery dedicated to the early North-African, also known as Coptic Christians. There are more than 250 tombs in the cemetery which were constructed, each with three arches and a domed roof, between the 4th and 6th centuries. This ancient cemetery is the oldest and most well-preserved in Egypt, and also contains Egypt’s oldest building, the Temple of Al-Ghuwaytah, which features amazingly preserved walls of murals that tell of age-old Bible stories.

The magnificent cemetery and its majestic Al-Ghuwaytah temple provide extremely valuable insights into Christianity and Egypt, showing the massive influence of Coptic Christians in Ancient Egypt, and the fascinating fusion of Egyptian culture into Christian imagery.
