Thórsmörk

Filled with sacred beauty in the Land of the Gods.

Thin silver streams slip past the scorched gray of volcanic rocks at the base of Thórsmörk, winding their way through thick copses of birch from the snow capped glacier peaks around. With two of the most famous hiking trails found in Iceland, Thórsmörk is any hiker’s dream come true.

The 30km long Fimmvörðuháls and 55km Laugavegur brings travelers across rocky terrain through the steep gorges dug into the mountain side and past glistening waterfalls. The trip would take you several days so it would be best to stop over by the Volcano Huts, basic lodging by the trail. Should you reach the end of Laugavegur, pockets of hot springs await you to rest your weary feet.

There are two more trails, the Tindfjöll circle and Valahnukur which can both be completed within a day. These loops bring you to the very boundary where earth becomes sky. You will be left with views of a cloak of heavy grey mist shrouding the peaks of raised earth all around, a thousand different paths and cracks running down the slopes from your feet. A land touched by the feet of Gods, Thórsmörk leaves little to the imagination.

Tips Before You Go
Thórsmörk is part of a nature reserve and once on the trail, there are few sites where food, water and other essential supplies are available. The volcano huts do serve food and prepare packed meals but they exist at only one location within the Húsadalur base. Besides hiking, it is also possible to rent a vehicle to drive through but the mountain routes only allow for the use of a 4x4. Alternatively, a bus tour or driver can be booked ahead of time. Camping is also permissible within the reserve.
