Sweden is famous for its endless selection of art museums, so having a reputation as being one of the best means there’s got to be something special about Thielska Gallery. For starters, it is situated in a lovely walled park beautifully on the Blockhusudden at Djurgården. Designed by Ferdinand Boberg for the specific purpose of serving as a sanctuary for fine art, the success with which Italian Renaissance, Southern and even Oriental style architecture are combined make the building itself an exceptional piece of art. The minimalist design of cleanly decorated and sparse surfaces, with a focus on geometric and cubic shapes means that the style of the house perfectly complements rather than distracts from the artwork.

As mentioned above, the unique collection from the last turn of the century contains works of art by countless renowned artists of the time, In the halls one the upper floor and the Munching Hall, the paintings lining the walls can be admired under the natural light which comes streaming through an exquisite glass ceiling. The tower room is where you’ll find well-known works such as Nietzsche's death mask and graphics by Edvard Munch. The lower floor, comprising 5 rooms of the original family is where the ever-changing but always noteworthy temporary exhibitions are displayed. In the hilly park surrounding the gallery are sculptures which are also worth taking a quick peek outside for.
