Long Beach, United States of America
The Walter Pyramid, California State University Long Beach

Who wouldn’t love to play sports here?

From afar, it looks like some incredible alien spacecraft that decided to make its home on the campus of Long Beach State University. It may take its inspiration from the pyramids of Giza, but the Walter Pyramid is entirely different from its ancient predecessor. The Walter Pyramid carries this ancient structure to perfection, with its smooth exterior that glints in the afternoon sun. Made entirely of dark blue corrugated aluminum, the pyramid rises 18 stories above its low-lying beach surroundings and can be seen for miles around. It’s the ultimate expression of modernity.

You’d also never be able to guess that this pyramid is actually an immense multi-purpose indoor arena, and one of the best collegiate sporting facilities in America. Its floor space already accommodates up to nine volleyball courts, so you can get an idea of its sheer size. It’s one of the only four true pyramids in the United States, and has entirely changed the image of both Long Beach University and city. No visit to the city is complete without making your way down to this iconic structure believed to be the largest space-frame one in North America.
