The museum provides vivid images of Europe’s painful past and showcases over 40 instruments of torture from different parts of Europe, ranging from the guillotine to the gallows and the inquisition chair. Each exhibit is illustrated with a brief description of the instrument’s historical background in 8 different languages, to accommodate for the diverse range of tourists who visit the museum. Most of the devices are modern reconstructions from antique texts and books, but some are genuine, authentic devices of torture from the past. Interesting objects and devices that should not be missed include the flute of shame, the Judas chair, the Guillotine, the iron maiden, and Catherine Wheels. The museum is popular amongst tourists because of its extensive collection of intriguing torture devices, and is regularly featured as one of the weirdest museums in the world.
