Putting a unique twist on the definition of ‘kampong’.
Dr David Fairchild had a passion for horticulture, travelling through South East Asia to collect all the exotic marvels it had to offer and bringing them back to enrich America. He needed an estate to showcase his rare finds, and this Kampong was born. Here he lived with his wife, surrounded by 200,000 of his prized plants, until his death. It has earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places as the only National Tropical Botanical Garden that is not located in the near-tropical state of Hawaii – Miami being the next closest thing.
9 acres of lush flora like palms, cyads and flowering trees alternate with plantations of our favourite tropical fruit like Pomelo, Avocado, Banana and Mango, creating the scene of untouched paradisal wilderness. We bet you’ve never heard of the other unique fruit like , candle fruit, peanut butter fruit, egg fruit, and cocoplums – unknown joys that Fairchild brought across the oceans.
The House is an unusual mix of Spanish and Southeast Asian that goes surprisingly well together, and has put a roof over the heads of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. A living, breathing, photosynthesizing museum, where you can feel nature’s therapy at its best.
