When Colonel Griffith J Griffith arrived in America with hopes and dreams of striking gold in the mining business, he purchased this 3000 acre plot of land of lush Californian wildlife and deep canyons. Griffith donated his land to the city for the price of a promise: that it would be “a place of recreation and rest for the masses, a resort for the rank and file, for the plain people”.

Fast forward to today and this is precisely what the park has become, as the venue for the Greek Theatre, an outdoor entertainment venue that has seen the legendary Sir Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Carlos Santana and countless other superstars give breath taking performances on its stage.

Set up in one of the canyons chosen for its fantastic acoustics that make the sound of the performances held here ring out clear as crystal, the theatre has a seating capacity of 5,900. From its humble beginnings as a classic opera theatre in 1931 with seats selling for $1, it has since grown to become a wildly sought after venue for numerous high school graduations, community events, television shows and movies. However, the most significant of its successes is that it fulfilled the wishes of Colonel Griffith in ways he only could’ve dreamed of, as a place to make cherished memories and unforgettable milestones.
