The Correr Museum (Museo Correr)

With its rich variety of collections, the Museo Correr houses both the art and history of Venice.

Kudos mainly to Teodoro Correr, an avid art collector from a noble Venetian family who devoted his life to amassing masterpieces and artefacts reflecting Venice's history, as he graciously bequeathed his treasures to the city in 1830. Laid out in various sections, see the remarkable collection by the great sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1822) in the Neoclassical Rooms. For numismatic enthusiasts, check out Room 11 for an almost complete series of coins minted by the Venetian Republic from its origins (early 9th century AD) to its fall (1797), and marvel at a painting by Tintoretto, Saint Justina, and the Treasurers. See the fantastic navigational instruments and paintings depicting the great naval battles fought by the Venetians in Room 12. And, be sure not to miss the mesmerizing Venetian paintings by Antonello da Messina and Giovanni Bellini.
