Temple of The Oracle

A beautiful temple in ruins, but don’t discount it just yet as it gives you beautiful views of the oasis.

All sorts of tales surround the Temple of the Oracle, located at the northwestern sector of the ruins in Aghurmi, and it is up to you to decipher truth from legend when you visit. Constructed in the 6th century BC, the temple was dedicated to the chief god Amun, and to this day, the ruins of the temple continue to be mightily impressive, despite not being at the height of its grandeur. It is also believed that this was the location where Alexander the Great was bestowed the title of “son of Amun”. So if you were to visit and walk here, you could brag to everyone about how you’ve walked in the footsteps of Alexander the Great! Although this might not be true, but it’s not like anyone will know anyway. While the temple itself may seem rather worn down, it was once a highly significant place. Rulers would come to seek advice here, while some of them sent armies to try and destroy it because they feared its power. As a visitor, you should therefore be very mindful about the things you do here, lest you anger an Egyptian deity. But ruins are not the only thing to see here though. The temple is not just rich in history, but in breath-taking views as well. It is surrounded by the ruins of Aghurmi, which used to be a thriving village. You can explore that too, but once you’re done with walking through dusty old ruins, why not get some fresh air as you stand at a vantage point that overlooks the Siwan Oasis. The sight of a clear expanse of blue and animals flocking there for water will surely be a welcome respite after spending hours looking at the yellow rocks and dust.

Tips Before You Go
The desert heat is intense, so it is advised that you actually visit late in the afternoon (or as close to evening as possible). This lets you escape the scorching heat as you explore the ruins, and you’ll also get gorgeous views of the sun setting over the oasis. It’s most definitely a win-win scenario.
