Temple of Hera

Fancy a visit to the Temple of Hera where the torch of the Olympic flame was lit?

Located at the mouth of the Imbrasus River, the majestic Temple of Hera and its romantic ruins were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. This is no surprise because the classical structure of the temple is fundamental to better understanding the stylistic and structural innovations that took place later on in the island.

According to Greek mythology, the Goddess Hera was born and raised on the beautiful island of Samos. A colossal sanctuary dedicated to the Goddess Hera, it was destroyed by an earthquake in the early 4th century C.E. Located west of Pythagoreio, see the single column from the original temple which is still standing and look out for the fascinating frieze which decorates the top walls of the pronaos and cella. Soak in the timeless beauty of this temple as you wander around the ancient ruins.
