The crown jewel of Greece’s religious centre, the Temple of Apollo at Delphi is built on a platform halfway up the slope of Mount Parnassus, most likely the first thing pilgrims see on their journey to Delphi. This magnificent temple was the most important building in all of Delphi and was the centre of all religious activity. It housed statues of all the major gods and offerings to them were all made in the temple, retaining the sacredness of all spiritual activities. The mystical Oracle of Delphi delivered her prophecies here as well.

The location of the temple holds great importance in Greek mythology. It is where the ancient Greeks believed was the centre of the world and which once served as the home of the mighty creator of Earth, Gaia. It also marks the spot where Apollo slayed the monstrous snake, Python, as revenge for terrorizing his mother.

Of the original temple which had a total of 40 sturdy yet elegant Doric columns, only six remain standing while the rest of the temple has eroded down to its foundations. Nonetheless, you can still sense the sheer scale of the structure, which measures 60 by 24 metres.
