Teatro Romano

History, art and culture are inseparable, and this can be seen at the ancient Teatro Romano.

Built at the foot of the St. Peter Hill at the end of the 1st century B.C., Teatro Romano is a testimony to the country’s long history and its involvement in the arts, despite having weathered serious cataclysms in the past. The ruins of the building remained buried under a massive amount of rubble until around the year 1830, when it finally saw daylight, thanks to a gentleman who took the initiative to restore it.

It is worth pondering how a magnificent building of such grand scale was conceptualized and constructed in that age, long before the advent of bulldozers and cranes. As you walk up to the open theatre and see the aerial view of the city below, try to imagine how the place would have looked back in the Roman times. You’ll also get to see various inscriptions and altars dedicated to ancient Gods on the way up. So start planning now!
