Teatro di San Carlo, Naples

A shrine to the one-of-a-kind genre of Opera music.

Opera is a controversial artform, some love it, some hate it, but when performed in the splendor of this theatre, nobody can fail to appreciate the impressive vocals that ring out, reverberating around the room with the perfect acoustics to complement them.

Here in Naples, Opera singing is their pride and glory and they take this significant part of their culture seriously. To honour it and share its wonder with the public, they have built this grand theatre. Five horseshoe shaped levels of viewing boxes, upholstered in rich red, decorated with intricate designs of goldleaf, look down upon the stage, which is framed by sumptuously painted curtains. Dazzling lights illuminate the theatre from all angles, and up above covering the entire scene is a fantastically frescoed ceiling that completes the magnificent scene.

Way Back in 1737, when it was commissioned by King Carlo III di Bourbone, it was the biggest opera house on the whole planet with room for an audience of more than 3000. As the oldest opera house in Europe still being used today, it has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tell me honestly, who can pass up listening to the powerful, dramatic, passionate opera singer belt it out on the stage of an opera house on par with the Pyramids of Egypt and The Great Wall of China?
