Te Mata Peak

See the awesome Te Mata Peak where legend has it that it was the prostrate body of Te Mata, the giant.

Rising majestically above the Heretaunga Plains, Te Mata stands proudly at a height of 399m. A haven for hikers and mountain bikers, the ascent to the peak makes for a great cardio workout as you savour the breathtaking scenery over Hawke’s Bay. Explore the 99 hectares of Te Mata Trust Park, a green sanctuary teeming with beautiful flora and fauna and delightful limestone valleys. At the summit, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Maungaharuru Ranges and Cape Kidnappers. Look out for the mighty Ruapehu Volcano which is visible on a clear day.

According to legend, the mists covering the stretch from the crown of Kahuranaki look like the lovely blue cloak Te Mata’s wife lay over him before leaping to her death. The impact of her fall formed the gully at the base of the cliff. A day trip to Te Mata Peak will certainly revive your soul.
