Tat Fan Waterfall

The highest waterfall – or waterfalls, in Laos.

You may have heard of it by a different name or have already seen various portraits of it hanging on restaurant walls, but nothing beats heading down to the Tat Fan/Tad Fane/Tat Fane Waterfall to grasp a firsthand experience of the enchanting scenery. From 120m atop the Bolaven Plateau, two parallel rivers tumble carelessly over the cliff’s edge, caught in a seemingly never-ending race to the bottom where they meet. The sight of the streams cascading against the lush greenery of the plateau gives the uncanny impression that the hill is crying out uncontrollable tears.

Most people would head up to the Tat Fan resort, a jungle lodge opposite the falls, to enjoy picturesque views of the stunning waterfalls while listening to the singing of the rainforest birds and the screeching of the resident cicadas. For the more energetic travelers, there is a guided hike available to the top of the falls, where you can see the Champi and Pak Koot rivers emerging from the dense forest and racing down to form the Huay Bang Lieng.
